Sorry about not sending these letters on a regular basis – life has interfered…..
Attached you will see a photo of Dawn’s and Mary H’s quilts using the same pattern, but different colour ways. What a difference colour makes! We will be displaying these quilts side by side at our show (only a month away!!!). Last week we distributed registration forms for items to be entered in the show, and so far I have only two returned. I am attaching a copy of the registration form to this letter, so you can download and print it out for yourself if you didn’t attend the last two meetings. Deadline for submission of entries is June 22. I need time to list all the entries, then pass on that info to Nancy McH, who will type the labels for each entry. As you can imagine, this takes TIME! I would encourage you to get your registration forms in to me ASAP, either by mail, email, or in person. You will see posters around the island this week….if you can find them under the many others posted on most boards!
We also wished Wendy F happy trails as she and Ron move from White Head to Sherbrooke, NS, where Ron is assuming a pastor’s position. Wendy is one of our founding members, and was instrumental in allowing us to call the NH Baptist hall our base.

A good number of ladies attended yesterday, and a lot of work and chatting got done. Nancy McH brought her large queen size quilt that she has finished hand quilting! She worked hard all winter to get it done. A few of us helped her choose the binding fabric. Mary H. brought her hand-pieced and hand quilted (with large stitches) hanging in the Apple Core pattern. Hilda was knitting a cute hat with an octopus on top, Nancy mcH had a lovely hand painted wooden bowl from Joan F, and I brought a kid’s quilt top (I Spy) to send on to Ft. McMurray, AB, when the time is right.
At coffee time Mary H. discussed the show, and passed around a sign up sheet just for an idea of how many items we might have on display. I will be circulating printed forms for more formal registration of items, and Nancy will print up the tags for the items. Beverley Parker will chair the refreshment committee. Mary will circulate a schedule to make sure the kitchen and admission desk are covered. We also discussed the small room, and it was agreed that it would house a small memorial display to honour Gladys Leighton, and the other part of the room would be a display and explanation of “Tools of the Trade”….. gizmos that members find particularly helpful with their craft. So be thinking about what you can contribute to that effort please.
We also decided that we will continue the 9:30 am start to our gatherings on Thursday, as more people come then than at 9 am as we have done in the past.
We had a good crowd out today, and were especially glad to see Nancy McH. and Linda K, among others.
Had several show and tell quilts, photos are below. There was one other, but my photo was very blurry, so will try to include it at a later date. Lots of knitting going on, and Dawn was working on the binding of her quilt for the Museum fundraiser this year.
Some of us also discussed giving our “crisis quilt” that we made 2-3 years ago to the Ft. McMurray fire victims, once we know where to send it and when. It will be a while before people get back there, and we will have to play our donation by ear. The new Facebook page, New Brunswick Quilters Gather, has something on this, and I suspect more organization details with be forthcoming over the next week or so. If you have a quilt other than our guild quilt that you wish to send along, let me know, and I will let you know the details as I learn about them.

At our meeting yesterday Dawn and I reviewed our weekend spent at the NB Gathering of the Guilds in Moncton, April 22-24. We had a great time, and learned a lot about the other 17 NB guilds in attendance (actually I think there are 22 guilds, but only 18 attended). Each guild’s delegates made a 10 minute presentation regarding the guild activities – what has worked and what hasn’t. They also showed a few examples of their projects during the presentation, and 4 guilds (including ours) opened their hotel rooms for an hour or so on Saturday for a small “Show ‘n Tell”. Our guild is the only one in attendance that includes other crafts other than quilting.
Another interesting facet to the gathering was the display of ads for many quilt teachers, wool dyers/applique shops, quilt fabric shops and other associated businesses across Canada. We were amazed at the number of people involved in the quilting industry in Canada, and were told that only about 40-50% of the people/companies contacted were represented.
There were two sessions of particular note – one was a panel discussion regarding conflict in guilds. The panel members presented some hints and examples of how to resolve conflict within groups, and although we don’t have conflict in ours (that we are aware of anyway!) it was still good information to have. The second was a presentation by a quilt designer, Karen Neary from N.S., who spoke at length about copyright and it’s importance to her as well as to those who use her patterns. Her message could boil down to this: when you use someone’s design to make a quilt (or a sweater, a wood-carving, a hooked rug etc.), you should give credit to the designer unless you significantly change the pattern. It is also not right to photocopy an original pattern and distribute it to others in a workshop for example. These guidelines are especially important if you are selling the item.
Saturday evening we enjoyed a trunk show brought to Moncton by the Maritime Modern Quilt Guild located in Halifax. These ladies, many of whom are quite young compared to our group, make “modern” quilts – these quilts are often made with solid colour fabrics, lots of “negative space” of grey and white fabric, and most importantly, THERE ARE NO RULES! The presenters were so enthusiastic that Dawn and I stopped at Fabricville on our way to the ferry to buy some solids and some grey fabric. We also managed a quick stop on Friday afternoon at the Covered Bridge Quiltery in Moncton.

Summer was HERE today! What a lovely warm day, especially at the entrance to the vestry, which we’ve determined to be the hotspot on Grand Manan.
Not too much to report. Wonderful to see Linda Kling among us today. The knitting needles were clicking away, Ce was caning her chair, Pam was hooking, and Dawn and I were doing last minute prep for our Gathering of the Guilds weekend in Moncton, starting tomorrow. I’m sure we will have lots to report next week.
